WHY DO WE CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. (Genesis 1:1) God created all things form the smallest amoeba to the largest elephant that roams the earth, the greatest whales that swim in the seas and the mighty condor that soars in the sky. His final masterpiece “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

So God created mankind in his own image,
    in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them. (Genesis 1:26-27)

God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. (Genesis 1:31)

Imagine a world totally unblemished, all creatures living in perfect harmony. Adam and Eve living together in perfect love, peace and joy with God.

But the serpent, (that is the devil) convinced them – and it didn’t seem that hard – that they needed more. They had riches beyond compare, yet they sought wisdom and equality with God. Satan told them the first great lie:  “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” (Genesis 3:4)

So shame, sin and decay entered paradise. The close fellowship with God was shattered. God called to them but Adam answered:  “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.” How eternally sad from perfect fellowship to fear and hiding.

Though God punished them by removing them from the garden of Eden, increasing their hardship in the work of their hands and the procreation of children, God did not abandon them. For He gave the reason why we celebrate Christmas.

And I will put enmity
    between you and the woman,
    and between your offspring[a] and hers;
he will crush[b] your head,
and you will strike his heel.” (Genesis 3:15)

The seed or offspring of the woman who would crush the head of Satan and restore paradise lost was Jesus Christ. The babe born in Bethlehem on that first Christmas day.

For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
    Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6)

But he was much more than a beautiful Curry and Ives Christmas Card, for he took on our punishment.

Isaiah 53

3 He was despised and rejected by mankind,
a man of suffering, and familiar with pain.
Like one from whom people hide their faces
he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.

Surely he took up our pain
    and bore our suffering,
yet we considered him punished by God,
    stricken by him, and afflicted.
But he was pierced for our transgressions,
    he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
and by his wounds we are healed.

Points for discussion.

Hello Audrey can you answer my question?

    12/09 20:12
    Audrey

I celebrate and most of my family and friends

    12/09 20:12
    Guest Archie

But you must be a Christian, what about others?

    12/09 20:13
    Guest Archie

I think a lot of people do not even know the story of Christmas

    12/09 20:14
    paulj

That’s a good question, and it’s part of the reason why we like to talk about Christmas.

    12/09 20:15
    paulj

A lot of non-Christian elements appear at Christmas time.

    12/09 20:15

most of society seem to celebrate, but without the hope and true joy to the world

    12/09 20:15
    Guest Archie

What do you mean by hope?

    12/09 20:16
    paulj

Well, before we could discuss hope, we’d need to discuss our despair, and the reason we are without hope. Audrey’s article shows the problem humans have had since the beginning.

    12/09 20:17
    Audrey

the world is groaning under the weigh of its sin

Audrey? How is the world groaning

    12/09 20:19

peace seems such a fleeting idea

Romans 8:19 For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. 20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. 23 And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.
